Native Americans have lived in Maine for more than 12,000 years, harvesting the abundant resources of its land and waters. They have preserved Native traditions in songs and stories, in fine basketry and wood carving.

 

The Abbe Museum has two locations, one at Sieur de Monts Spring and one in Bar Harbor. The museum's focus is on Maine’s first people known as the Wabanaki, or " People of the Dawn."

Does it Cost Money?

Yes, $2 adults, $1 children ages 6 through 15. Children six and under are free. This applies at both museum locations. Native Americans or Abbe Members. Group rates available by reservation for groups of 10 or more.

What will I see at the museum?

The Abbe Museum is especially well known for its extensive archaeological collections from mid-coastal Maine and for its Native American baskets of the Northeast, dating back to the early 1800s.

Where is the Sieur de Monts Spring location?

Sieur de Monts Spring in Acadia National Park, 2 miles south of Bar Harbor, just off the Park Loop Road and off Route 3.

Where is the Bar Harbor location?

26 Mount Desert Street (Route 3), across from the Village Green in downtown Bar Harbor.
