What kind of whales will I see on a Bar Harbor whale watch tour?
There is plenty of marine life in the Gulf of Maine and Acadia region. Typically encountered whales are Finback, Humpback and Minke whales. Dolphins, porpoises and seals are also usually seen, as well as a variety of birds such as seagulls, hawks and puffins. Bald eagles, and Peregrine falcons are known to nest in the region and can sometimes be seen. Occasionally, if you are lucky you may see the highly endangered Right Whale visit the area. Other species of whales, like Pilot Whales are also sometimes spotted. You may also see Basking Sharks, Mako Sharks, Blue Sharks, and Giant Tuna. It is never known exactly what you will see on a tour.
Will I see a whale on the tour?
The whales cover many square miles every day. The Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company uses jet powered boats that are the fastest available, and can cover the most area. However, some conditions, like foggy days occasionally warrant longer search times. That is where there special sonar comes in handy. Even when the visibility is poor, there technology offers the best chances to find whales.
When is the best time to see the whales?
Tours begin in June and end in October. The whales are feeding in the Gulf of Maine during this entire period. Many species of migratory cetaceans begin to arrive once the krill and other foods become plentiful in the spring, typically by April. Essentially tours are not limited by the availability of whales but by cold weather and the changing ocean conditions. So actually, the entire season offers a great opportunity to see whales.
